Home of the Montreal Canadiens, a leading railway’s headquarters and a Montreal web design company; museums, shopping and an underground city; Montreal is a city rich in history and culture and has many things to offer from both an economic, as well as a tourist standpoint; all this without even leaving the downtown core.
“Ville-Marie”
Founded in 1642 and incorporated in 1832; Montreal, originally called “Ville-Marie”, is today named for the tripled-peak hill “Mont-Royal” situated in the heart of the city. This island, located in the south west of the province of Quebec, is at the junction of the Saint-Lawrence and the Ottawa Rivers. Montreal’s port, positioned at one extremity of the Saint-Lawrence seaway is a gateway extending from the Great Lakes into the Atlantic Ocean; the access to the wide open waters significantly contributes to the city’s economy.
Languages
Over 50% of Montreal’s population speak French at home; making Montreal the second largest mainly French speaking city in the world, after Paris.
Boroughs
There are 19 large boroughs in Montreal which are subdivided into smaller neighbourhoods; the Ville-Marie neighbourhood encompasses the downtown core; Montreal’s famous Old Montreal, Chinatown, the Latin Quarter, the Cité de la Multimédia and the Quartier des spectacles. Unaided, the Ville Marie district will keep you busy for days; the Old Port, Montreal’s City Hall, the Pointe-à-Callière Museum, pubs and restaurants. When the summer heat soars, take cover in Montreal’s extensive underground: stores, movie theatres and coolness!
Port of Montreal
The largest inland port in the world; the Port of Montreal processes over 26 million tonnes of cargo annually; sugar, grain, petroleum, machinery and consumer goods make their way through this Port which turned Montreal into a significant railway metropolis.
Economy
Based on GDP, the city of Montreal ranks second in Canada and is the leader in Quebec; Montreal is a major technological, commercial, financial, industrial, cultural and world affairs centre; since 1997, the video game industry is booming in Montreal. Several companies are headquartered in Montreal such as CAE, Bell Canada, Canadian National Railway, Molson and Standard Life; as well as the gaming industry, web site design and Internet marketing companies make their home in downtown Montreal.
